Veliko Tarnovo is situated at the foot of the Balkan Range Mountain, proudly staged on four hills. The town is known for being the capital of the country during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12 century).

Towering Yantra river is Tsarevets Hill - the residence of the famous Joan Asen I. The turret part of the complexly built fortifications of the hill is related to the name of the Latin emperor Baldwin of Flanders who was defeated and held hostage by the famous Bulgarian king Kaloyan.

Veliko Tarnovo is also known as the birthplace of the Bulgarian constitution since 1879, when the Constitution of the Bulgarian Principality was officially accepted by the constituent assembly of Tarnovo.

In the Summer, Sound and Light show metaphorically sets the hill on fire, commemorating the historic past of the town and its patriotic spirit.
