Sozopol


Prevously named after the Greek god Apollo, Sozopol is one of the oldest European settlements, founded almost 3000 years ago. Once a thriving port and commercial center the town will charm you with cobbled streets and picturesque squares bordered by timber houses with quaient small courtyards.

Visitors should definitely pay a call on the Church of St George, for a glimpse at one of the greatest christian treasures recently discovered during archaeological excavation on a nearby island – the relic urn in the shape of a sarcophagus with the relics of St. John the Baptist.

The remains of a complex fortification system comemorates the rises and falls of the settlement of Sozopol. Medieval churches and over 1 100 revival houses shape the characteristic silhouette of the architectural reserve.

Every year the town hosts the annual festival of contemprorary Bulgarian art – Apolonia.
