Carved into the vertical rock at the height of 23 m, Madara Horseman is the only rock relief in Europe from the early Middle Ages, and for its unique nature it is enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The enigmatic site is situated only a few kilometers away from the first Bulgarian capital - Pliska. The famous relief in Madara depicts a lion stabbed by the spear of a graceful horseman, followed by his faithful dog.

Dating back to the 8th century AD, the real-sized horseman symbolizes the might of the rulers of Danubian Bulgaria.

The Old-Bulgarian inscriptions that encircle the monument are written in Greek and trace back the relations between famous emperors and khans, revealing breves from centuries of wisdom and far-off glory.
