Nessebar, one of the oldest settlements on the Balkans, is situated on a rocky Black Sea peninsula. The town was first mentioned by Herodotus in his chronicles describing the march of the Persian King Darius against the Scythians in 513 BC.

The first name of old Nessebar was Melsabria (Melsa - by the name of a Thracian chieftain and bria-meaning town). During the different epochs and under Greek, Roman and Byzantine rulers the name altered from Mesembria to Mesemvria to the present Nessebar.

In 812 for the first time the old town of Nessebar becomes part of the Bulgarian State, after it was conquered by the brave khan Krum.

Replete with narrow, cobblestone lanes, quaint houses, and churches of various styles and architecture, the entire old quarter of Nessebar has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
