According to the old legend, the first roses were brought in Thrace from the distant land of Persia by the soldiers of the famous Alexander Makedonski. Bulgarian roses are inheritors of Damascena rose and our country is considered the biggest producer of rose oil in the world.

Every year in early June in the picturesque Valley of the Thracian kings, nearby Kazanlak a Rose Festival takes place. During this unique event, visitors could observe harvesting rituals, the coronation of Queen Rose and a street parade - symbolic tribute to beauty as a reward to the hard work of rose - pickers.

During the tour guests pay an organized visit to a privately-owned distillery where they are welcomed with bread and salt according to an old Bulgarian custom. Such an encounter will get them acquainted with the thorough process of cultivation and distillation of roses.

Degustation of tasty rose jam, home-made liquor, cheese pastry and selected specialties will delightfully introduce the specific flavour of our traditional cuisine. Further participation of folklore ensembles, national exhibitions and ethno performances in the festival will draw an authentic portrait of Bulgaria right before your eyes.
